History of the Department
The Department of Studies in Telugu was established in July 1974 under the headship of the dean, faculty of Arts.Since 1969 Telugu was a second language at Degree level and in Honors level at central college campus under the centre for Kannada studies.This is the only PG Department in Karnataka offering M.A. as regular course and as well as correspondence course.The intake of PG candidates is 22. Most of the students come from the border districts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and HosurTaluk of Tamilnadu. So far, 300 students have obtained their M.A., degrees in Telugu. Through distance education nearly 250 students have obtained M.A. degrees.The Department offers Ph.D. course. 55 students have so far, been awarded Ph.D. and presently 06 scholars are working for Ph.D.The department contributed much to the fields of comparative Literature (Kannada, Telugu), Folklore and Comparative Modern (Telugu, Kannada) Literature.The department has celebrated its Silver Jubilee celebrations by organizing Seminars, Ashtavadhanam in March 2000.Many research articles were published by the Department faculty. Research articles written by the faculty in Kannada for the “Suvarna Karnataka Male” in 2007 about “Kannada Telugu, BhashaSahityaBandhavya” is a feather to the crown of research.The Department has plans to do Telugu Translation of Kannada Classical Literature and Modern Literature, such as Novel, Short Stories, Poetry etc.It is also proposed to collect Telugu Folklore from bilingual districts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.Documentation of Telugu folklore and preservation of Folklore in Audio and Video Cassettes,Publications of collected Folklore and Comparative Modern Literature materials.Organizing seminars/ workshops on Translation, Comparative Literature, Modern Literature and Folklore.

E. Eligibility Graduates who have secured 40% in the aggregate of all subjects and 50% marks in the cognate subject in the qualifying University examinations are eligible to apply. Candidates with B.A./ B.Sc./B.Com. Degrees are eligible to apply provided they have scored 55% in the Language concerned in the degree course.
