History of the Department
From a humble beginning in 1965 with hardly a dozen students on its rolls and a couple of teachers drawn from the directorate of collegiate education, the department has grown in both quality and numbers. With the introduction of B A (Hons.) in sociology, the department witnessed a major expansion in the late sixties and early seventies. It was during that period too that the department had an exchange programme with the Ford Foundation, and the United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI). The department was one of the very few to be identified for the introduction of faculty improvement programme (FIP) by the UGC in the late seventies. In recognition of the outstanding work done by the department for over two decades the department was accorded special assistance by UGC in 1988, the first sociology department to be given the status in south India
