Vision & Mission:
Life Science involves the study of life and living matter in all its diverse forms and phenomena especially with reference to its origin, growth, reproduction, structure and behaviour. It constitutes one of the thrust areas of the 21st century, and is considered as “the fastest growing sector” by socialists, economists and scientific communities across the world. Keeping in pace with the exponential increase in scientific and technological advancements in recent years, it is essential to educate, train and equip the present generation of Life Science graduates with the knowledge and skills which will help to sustain this tremendous advancement. The Department of Life Science aims to live up to this promise of providing quality and affordable education to fulfil the growing demands of both academia and industries.
The department was established with a mission of discovering and disseminate knowledge in Life Science through research and creative inquiry, teaching, and learning, and to address problems affecting human health and welfare.History of the Department
The Department was originally established as R and D program in Sericulture with the World Bank grant in the year 1980 to offer M.Sc. In Sericulture for the first time in the country. Subsequently, it was upgraded as Department of Sericulture which produced about 480 M.Sc. and 65 Ph.D. students to cater to the needs of sericulture industry. Of the late, after obtaining the necessary approval from various statutory bodies, the Department started offering M.Sc., course in Life Science from the year 2006-07. The course curriculum has been prepared based on UGC-CSIR NET syllabus. In addition, Bangalore University felt the importance of integrated interdisciplinary approach in teaching and research in Life science subjects and entrusted the Department for institution of Integrated B.Sc.-M.Sc course in Biological Sciences during the year 2007-2008. Further The Department was awarded funds under UGC Innovative Diploma for initiating one year post-graduate Diploma in Clinical embryology and Assisted reproductive technology course from the year 2013-2014. With this background the Department of Sericulture has recently been renamed as the Department of Life Science and aims to live up to the promise of providing quality and affordable education to fulfil the growing demands of both academia and life science-based industries. Further, student - teacher interactive seminars, hands on training and field visits are some of the meaningful agenda planned for these courses with the aim of making teaching, training and research contemporary and vibrant
Objectives:
- mpart high quality, integrated and interdisciplinary Life Science education in a vibrant academic ambiance with distinguished teachers, support staff and infrastructure.
- To establish state-of-art student laboratories for training students with modern tools and techniques which will enable them to pursue careers in academia and industry.
- To nurture scientists who will take up seminal and challenging assignments in Universities, R&D Institutions and Industry.
- In addition to the core curriculum, the students will have opportunities to pursue research projects in reputed research establishments jointly supervised by faculties from both Department as well as research institute.
