History of the Department:

The Department owes its origin to the vision and forethought of the former Vice Chancellor of Bangalore Univeristy, Dr. H.Narasimhaiah. It was commenced during 1973-74 under his able guidance and benevolence. It was the third in the series of LIS Courses started in the state. Realising the growth of academic, public and special libraries especially the last ones triggered out of establishment of number public sector undertakings like, HMT, BHEL, BEL and others in the City of Bangalore. The need for the specialised manpower to manage the library and information centres of these organisations was sought very much.

 The Department with some initial hiccups took on the lauching pad during the 1980s and is now considered one of well known school of library and information science in the country. It has been updating its curriculum to the contemporary needs of the LIS professional practices and adapting to the changes timely. Since the mid-1980s it introduced the basic curruculum on the application of computers in library systems and services and today it has developed a good IT Laboratory to prepare the students for the emerging library and information services environment. The Faculty members of the Department have also adopted to the changing needs and have acquired sufficient knowledge and skills for teaching, research in the emerging subjects.

The Department is in the forefront of LIS Research with as many as 25 Ph.Ds. awarded during the last 25 years.

About Library and Information Science:

The Libraries are historically as old as human civilization. The man’s urge for ‘Recording Knowledge” has been considered as the genesis and birth for the libraries in the world. As early as 9 B.C. Clay Tablet Libraries were found at a place called Ninevh, held under the ageis of King Ashurbani Pal. So libraries have an age old history and legacy. Library Science education was started in the late 19th Century in USA and spread to different parts of the world and to India in the early 20th Century.

The profession which was considered as an apprenticeship vocation was given the professional status in the mid-20th Century. Library Science in fact deals with Universe of Knowledge in its fold, “books” being its main resources are brought out in every area of knowledge and library profession has evolved techniques, methods and tools to handle them since age of clay tablets to the present era of eBooks. So the profession has been acquiring skills and knowledge of seveal cognate fields and has developed into one of the most reckonable areas of study in the world today. It is on the threshold of merging with information and communication technologies and embarking towards a new and advance fields of studies in the modern world.

Academic Strides of the Department

  • 1973: Establishment of the Department with one year B.Lib.Sc. Degree
  • 1974-75: Started one year M.Lib.Sc. Degree Course
  • 1998-2001: Changed two years Integrated MLIS programme (Annual Scheme)
  • 2002: Introduced Semester Scheme
  • 2014-15: switched over to Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)
  • Student Intake: 30+ Supernumerary quota+ 5 payment seats
