History of the Department

The Department of Geology, Bangalore University is one of the earliest and pioneering Department started in the country at the famed Central College in the year 1898. Both M.Sc and B.Sc( Hon’s.) in Geology were offered at Central College. The Department functioned in Central College till 1978 and later was shifted to sprawling new campus at Jnana Bharathi which is now offering M.Sc (Applied Geology) and Ph.D programmes . The department has been contributing significantly to the geological fraternity in general and to Precambrian Geology of South India in particular.  A marked stride was also made in the field of Micropalaeontology, Economic Geology and Groundwater in hard rock terrains.  Several research programs were identified and implemented with the support of UGC, DST, IFCPAR, NSF (USA), DAAD (GERMANY), JSPS (JAPAN), ISRO, DAE, GSI, MGD and CGWB.  Also, Department has several on-going International collaborative research programs to date.  The alumni’s of this department have occupied prestigious positions in Organizations, Institutions and in many walks of life.

The Department has good analytical facilities for conducting class work and research.  The Department has acquired state of art equipments like AAS, UV Spectrophotometer, Ion Meter and XRF to analyze rocks, water and mineral samples.  Remote Sensing and GIS Laboratory with work station has been established.  Museum has collection of minerals, fossils and rocks of Achaean to recent.  The Department has spacious auditorium with state of art of audio visual equipment to conduct conference/ seminars. The Department library has over 500 recent editions of books and also back volumes of Journals.  Besides, SC/ST book bank and copies of M.Phil. Dissertations and Ph.D. thesis are also available. Students completing M.Sc., Geology/Applied Geology, have job opportunities in State/Central government, overseas organizations, research and teaching institutions.  Many students were selected in campus interviews held by different exploration and mining companies. Globally earth science is gaining importance in view of climatic change, geological hazards and depletion of natural resources.  Keeping this in view the curriculum is updated periodically to meet the needs of the society and to attract young talents to take up the academic and research pursuits.
