Geography

About Department:

Geographers ask where things are located on the surface of the Earth, why they are located where they are, how places differ from one another, and how people interact with the environment. There are two main branches of geography: Physical Geography and Human Geography. Further connecting these branches through advanced methodology are geoinformatics methods that draw on computer science, statistics, cartography, and spatial analysis.

Geographers were, in fact, among the first scientists to sound the alarm that human-induced changes to the environment were beginning to threaten the balance of life itself. They are active in the study of global warming, desertification, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, groundwater pollution, and flooding.

physical geography, which examines the physical, chemical and biological processes that occur in the immediate vicinity of the Earth's surface. Physical geographers study patterns of climates, land forms, vegetation, soils, and water. They forecast the weather, manage land and water resources, and analyse and plan for forests, rangelands, and wetlands. Many human and physical geographers have skills in cartography and geographic information systems.

History of the Department:

The inception of P.G. Department of Geography was in the year 1974-75 in the central college campus, Bangalore University. Dr. H.N. Narasimhaih the then hon’ble Vice-Chancellor and Prof. M.S. Shanthaveeraiah were behind the establishment of the Department. The Department grew initially under the stewardship of Dr. C. Naganna, the first Head of the Department. Then Dr. Daksha C. Barai was heading the Department. Later, rotation of chairmanship had been introduced.

The Department offers M.Sc. in Geography, M.Sc. Geoinformatics (Self-financed scheme) , M.Sc. Natural Disaster Management (Self-financed scheme), P.G. Diploma in Geoinformatics (Self-financed scheme) and Ph.D. Programmes. There is a greater demand for the graduates from this Department and so is the Demand for the courses too. Since inception 47 Ph.D., degrees have been awarded from the Department.

Library:

The Department of Geography has its own library supported by BU & Supported Organizations.  Around 2000 books are available that cover Geography, Geoinformatics and Natural Disaster Management from national to international authors from various publishers.

Satellite Images:

The Department has LISS-IV, Cartosate DEM & Quick Bird Images covering the entire Karnataka. We are also having MoU with National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) so, that we can get satellite images any time we need and support and assistance from NRSC. We also have plenty of Topo sheets covering entire India with 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scale from Survey of India (SOI) and Weather Maps from Indian Metrological Department (IMD). Students, Research Scholar and Faculties are getting use from these imageries and publishing their research articles and projects.

Software:

The Department is well equipped with ArcGIS, ERDAS Imagine, AutoCAD, Quantum GIS, Geo-Media Professional, ILWIS and IGIS software. We are also having DGPS, Handy-GPS and Total Station for surveying and field work. The Department of Geography is also teaching Programing Languages such as Python, C++, JAVA and HTML.

All M.Sc. students will have access to both GIS and Remote Sensing software during their two-year study which will help them to find very good placements in the Government and Non-Government establishments. Students, Research Scholar and Faculties are getting use from these Software and publishing their research articles and projects.

Weather Station: We have modern Weather Station with more than six weather parameters (Temperature, Humidity, Rainfall, Solar Radiation, Atmospheric Pressure, Wind speed and Wind direction) by Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC) and linked with KSNDMC server. The students can get Real-Time Weather data for their projects and practical exercise. They will also get more exposer to weather phenomenon that changes locally. Students, Research Scholar and Faculties are getting use from these Data and publishing their research articles and projects. ISRO Lab: Indian Space Research Organization has supported the Department to have well-equipped Research Lab to get more research facilities to the research scholar & students.  The lab is equipped with GIS and Remote Sensing software along with Remote Sensing data which will provide benefits to the students. Invited talks: Department of Geography is regularly conducting Invited talks through Online and Offline from various fields to enhance students’ knowledge. Resources persons are from international & National Universities, Research Institutions and Corporate companies so that Students, Research Scholars and Faculties are getting exposer in international and national platforms.
