History of the Department

The Department of Sanskrit which was a part of Central College, Bangalore, was made the post- Graduate Centre of the Bangalore University in 1964.  In 1968 it was converted into a post-Graduate Department of Sanskrit under the Chairmanship of Prof. K.T. Pandurangi. Sri. M.A. Krishnaswamy was also there in the Department.  The post-graduate classes in Sanskrit were conducted by the two teachers with some guest Lecturers.  In the year 1970 two more teachers, 1) Sri.M.Sivakumara Swamy and 2) Sri.M.A. Lakshmitatachar  joined the Department.  The post-graduate Department of Sanskrit was shifted to the new Jnanabharathi campus of the University along with other language Departments.  In the year 1975 Sri D. Prahladachar and Smt. Meera Chakravorthy joined the Department.  During the same year Smt. B.G. Sreelakshmi, research assistant in the Department, was promoted to the post of Lecturer in the Department. In the year 1979, when Prof. K.T. Pandurangi retired, Dr. M.SivakumaraSwamy was selected as Prof. of Sanskrit and was made the Chairman of the Department.  In year 1980 Smt. M.S. Bhavani and Sri Sugnanamurthy joined the Department as Lecturers.  Again in the year 1982 Sri D. Prahladachar was selected as reader in Sanskrit.  In 1994 Sri C.Shivaraju was appointed as Lecturer in Department. This was followed by the appointment of Vid.U.Radhakrishna as Lecturer in the Department.  This was the staff position up to 1998 when Dr. M. Sivakumara Swamy retired from rervice and Sri D.Prahladachar was appointed as chairman of Department.  After the appointment of D. Prahaladachar as the Vice-Chancellor Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeta at Thirupati, Dr. MeeraChakravorthy, Reader in the Department, was appointed as the Chairperson of the Department.   The  chairmanship  rotated  between Dr. MeeraChakravorthy and    Dr. M.S. Bhavani another reader in the Department for every two years. Dr. Meera Chakravorthy and Smt. B.G. Sreelakshmi retired from service in 2009 and 2010 respectively.  This is staff wise Development of the Department from 1968 to the present Day.

E. Eligibility :

Candidates who have secured 40% marks in the aggregate of all the subjects and 50% marks in the cognate subject at the Bachelor’s Degree Level OR candidates with a BA/B.Sc/B.Com/BBM/B.C.A/B.H.M., Degree are eligible to apply; provided they have secured 55% in the language in the Degree course OR students who have passed Sahitya Examination in Sanskrit OR students who have Passed Diploma Course in Sanskrit with a Degree or it’s equivalent of the University OR students who have Passed Sanskrit Bhasha Vidvat Madhyama.
