The Dept.of performing Arts of Bangalore University was established in the year 1973 with a clear Vision and Misssion to give an Academic Demension to the field of Dance, Drama,and Music by the then Honorable Vice Chancellor - Nadoja.Dr H.Narasimiah. During its unperturbed Journey of over three decades and a half. The Department has produced a number of performers who have acquitted themselves creditably in the Arena of Dance, Drama and Music thereby bringing credit to the Dept. and getting laurels to themselves. The Deparment of performing Arts is a full fledged post graduate centre and offers Master Degree Courses in Dance,Drama and Music. It also has an M.Phil and Ph.D programme in each of the above subjects. So far the Dept has produced 30 Ph.Ds in Music-7 Ph.Ds in Drama and 8 in Dance. Bangalore University is the only university in Karnataka which has post graduate courses in all the three branches of performing Arts i.e. Dance,Drama and Music. Main emphasis has been laid on the practical aspects ith a substantial background of theory. Each student is assessed based on their individual project, their participation in Seminars, Drama production, Music and Dance class room concerts, departmental productions and the like.

E. Eligibility
a) M.P.A. in Music (Vocal/Instrumental):: A degree with Music Vocal/Instrumental as one of the optional subjects with at-least 50% marks in the concerned optional subjects, on a merit intern among these applicants OR a graduate with a minimum of 50% marks secured in the Senior Grade Examination in Music (Vocal/instrumental), conducted by Secondary Education Board of Karnataka OR A graduate with a minimum of 50% marks secured in PG diploma or 2 Years Diploma or 4 years Certificate ours in Vocal/Instrumental Music conducted either by any recognized University of any State outside Karnataka or Central Institutions/Universities. OR any degree with certificate course in Music OR All India Radio/Dooradharshana Gradation, OR Diploma in Music or five years of learning certificate by any veteran musician.
b) M.P.A. in Dance: A Degree with Dance as one of the optional subjects with at-least 50% marks in the concerned optional subject, or merit intern among these applicants OR a graduate with a minimum of 50% marks secured in the Senior Grade Examination in Dance, Conducted by Secondary Education Board of Karnataka OR a graduate with a minimum of 50% marks secured in the PG diploma or 2 years Diploma 4 Years Certificate Course in Dance conducted either by any recognized Universities or any State outside Karnataka or Central Institutions/Universities.
Any degree with Senior exam of Bharathanatyam or Any certificate course of Bharathnatyam or Gradation of Doordhrshan or Diploma. Five years of learning certified by any veteran Dancer.
c) M.P.A. in Theatre: A graduate with Drama/ dance/Music as cognate subject cognate subject OR Any Graduate with a Diploma/ Certificate Course examination in Drama/Film Acting conducted by the Government of Karnataka, Dept. of Public Instruction/by any State Govt. / Central Govt. OR any graduate with A Diploma From Janapada Loka Affiliated to Bangalore University, Bangalore / Abhinaya Taranga (reputed Drama Institute of Bangalore( / Certificate of Drama Workshop conducted by Karnataka Nataka Academy or NSD. Any degree with five years theater/Drama Experience.
d) M.P.A. in Mridangam: : A degree in music with Mrudanga as one of the optional subjects with 50% in the cognate subject OR a graduate with a minimum of 50% secured in the senior grade examination of Mridanga conducted by the Karnataka Secondary Education Board, Government of Karnataka OR A graduate with minimum 50% marks secured in a P.G> Diploma or two years Diploma or four years certificate course in Mrudanga conducted either by any recognized University of any State outside Karnataka or Central Institutions / Universities or Certificate course in Mrudanga.
Any degree with certificate course in Music. OR All India Radio/Dooradharshan Gradation. OR Diploma in Mridanga or five years of learning certificate by any veteran musician.

Innovative Outreach Activities:
The Department has focused on modern trends and innovation in the field of performing Arts. Some important outreach activities of the department are Sri Purandara- Thyagaraja Aradhana, Annual Drama Production of music and Dance by students. Music and dance classroom concerts, thematic presentation by students, presentation of Ballet, Rangothsava, Yuva Rangothsava, Chaitra Pallava, play production in connection with “World Theater Day” etc. These Programmes are open to the general public and provide useful platform for students to unfurl their talents.
The Department has its own monthly Journal – Kaladhwani to inspire the students to cultivate the writing habits – so far the department has brought out 24 issues of Kaladhwani.
The department has produced a Documentary entitled Kala Sinchana documenting the multifarious activities of the Department since its inception.

Applied for UGC and awaiting the results. The department has fellowship sanctioned for J.R.F. scholars to carryout research
