History of the Department:
The post graduate department of Hindi came into existence in the year 1971. Prof. Hiranmay, Prof.Bharatiramanachar, Prof. Saragu Krishna Murthy, Prof.T.G.Prabhashankar ‘Premi’, Dr. MitthalliBhattacharjee, Dr.MehtaShenkar have contributed immensely in the growth of the Department from a center of learning of Hindi language and literature to providing wide ranging need based programmes like Diploma courses in translation and functional Hindi. The Department has grown qualitatively in teaching and research. In spite of the fact that Karnataka is a non-Hindi speaking state, the Department of Hindi in Bangalore University, apart from teaching Hindi language and literature at M.A. level, has moved into interdisciplinary areas both in translation and research and has been able to provide and uphold a very good academic standard.
In order to encourage students’ interests in academic, cultural and literary activities, every year with the help of UP/MP grants, a research magazine - ‘Kuntal Bharati’ is published, literary and cultural competitions are conducted for students, a book grant is given to ten deserving students of the final semester. We have also instituted two awards, Mahatma Gandhi Puraskar for original writing in Hindi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Puraskar for translation.
The department has its own library with 1660 books and collection of research dissertations. Books are added every year The students are encouraged to exhibit their in the form of a monthly wall magazine ‘pratibha ‘.
Special lectures by eminent scholars and litterateurs are arranged every year under UP/MP grants, Harigovind Family Charities Endowment Lecture programme and by the University. Also, scholars from North Indian Universities and Organizations visit the department every year under the National Lecture Series programme of Central Hindi Directorate, New Delhi. Department faculty also visit North Indian Universities under this programme.
