History of the Department
The Department of English, Bangalore University was established in 1965. Bangalore University was one of the earliest Universities in India which introduced and taught an English Language component in the M.A English Course and this was done by Prof W.W.S.Bhasker. Luminary teachers like Prof. L.S.Seshagiri Rao , Prof.S.Ramaswamy, Prof Lankesh, Prof. Vimala Rama Rao , Prof.M.A. Yadugiri, Prof Hasan Mansur and Prof. T.G.Vaidyanathan along with several batches of committed students set a tradition of devotion to work from which the Department has steadily drawn inspiration. During the five decades of its growth , through constant rethinking, it has oriented itself towards a broader vision of English Studies and has opened the doors to interdisciplinarity. At present, the Department has a team of seven teachers comprising three Professors and four Assistant Professors who stand committed to the cause of quality teaching and research. There are 147 PG students and 34 PhD students in the Department in the year 2015.

To equip students with conceptual and theoretical tools which would help them analyze complex.
To focus on English Language Studies with Papers in Linguistics , English Language Teaching and Communicative English to enable students to become good teachers of.
To sensitize students to the local and the particular even as they meet the challenges of globalization and rapid.
English being the link language of the world as well as the language of opportunities, the Department hopes to play a pivotal role in the dissemination of the language to all sections of society and devise mechanisms to help its realization.

E. Eligibility : Graduates who have secured 40% in the aggregate of all subjects and 50% marks in the cognate subject in the qualifying University examinations are eligible to apply. Candidates with B.A., B.Sc., or B.Com Degree are eligible to apply provided they have scored 55% in the Language concerned in the degree course.
